DESCRIPTION:Join us for the world premiere of Beyond Punishment: Stories of Justice and Healing\, an original interview-based theater performance\, co-produced by the Justice Beyond Punishment Collaborative (JBPC) and Ping Chong and Company! 11/30 and 12/1 at Weeksville Heritage Center. 12/3 at Hi-Arts. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWritten and directed by Kirya Traber in collaboration with the performers\, Beyond Punishment follows the lives of four remarkable individuals who grapple with the intersections and impacts of interpersonal and state violence. This production\, performed by the storytellers themselves\, gives insight into their lives\, leadership\, and healing journeys. Together\, their stories encourage us to imagine justice beyond a punitive system that begets further violence. \n\n\n\nAll performances are free and open to all\, and will be presented at and supported by the Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights and Hi-ARTS in East Harlem. (215 E 99th St\, New York\, NY 10029)\n\n\n\n\nProduction Background:\n\n\n\nFor Beyond Punishment: Stories of Justice and Healing\, Kirya Traber was invited by JBPC to bring together a group of organizers with lived experience of incarceration to share their own stories in an interview-based theater production. Beyond Punishment was created through interviews and workshops with the cast members. The theatrical format of the presentation is based on and inspired by Ping Chong and Company (PCC)’s Undesirable Elements series of interview-based theater works examining issues of identity\, place\, and belonging. Each production is made with local partner organizations and local participants telling their own stories on stage. Creator Kirya Traber is a long-time collaborating artist and facilitator in the Undesirable Elements series. \n\n\n\nAbout the producers & creators:\n\n\n\nThe Justice Beyond Punishment Collaborative (JBPC) is a project of the Columbia Center for Justice with the goal of addressing the intersections of state and interpersonal violence\, and strengthening our ideas and approaches to safety and justice that do not rely on punishment\, domination\, and supremacy. We are working to support our movements in offering compelling and cohesive stories and messaging to end violence\, with the goal of realizing a world with justice beyond punishment. Participating organizations include the Center for Constitutional Rights\, Community Capacity Development\, Common Justice\, Girls for Gender Equity\, How Our Lives Link Altogether (H.O.L.L.A!)\, The National Council for Currently and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls\, Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP)\, the Surveillance Resistance Lab\, and V-Day. The Campaign also includes individual collaborators Charlene Allen\, Kathleen Pequeño\, and Sharon White-Harrigan. The Collaborative is supported by Trinity Church Wall Street. \n\n\n\nPing Chong and Company (PCC) creates theater and art that reveal beauty\, invention\, precision\, and a commitment to social justice. Originally founded in New York City in 1975\, today the company is a highly adaptive and supportive home base for multigenerational\, interdisciplinary artists with generative theater practices. The company creates original interdisciplinary\, community-specific work; and cultivates artistry through training and education programs. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join us for 3 RITES: Happiness\, the third and final installment of 3 RITES: Life\, Liberty\, Happiness\, a three-part performance series by DELIRIOUS Dances/Edisa Weeks. A celebratory investigation of how laughter and pleasure reside in the body. The “Happiness” rite is about self-care and making time to relax\, laugh and recharge for the labor to uphold the values of life\, liberty and happiness. Each showing will consist of a Happiness Fête and special performances. The performances will feature four dancers and commissioned music by Nathaniel Braddock\, played live by the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International. The rite begins with the Happiness Fête where the audience is invited to engage in a collective celebration of wellness and joy by participating in portrait sketches\, massages\, Delirious Hair Designs\, learning line dances\, sharing a meal and more. The Fete is followed by laughtercises\, and the performance that culminates in a dance party with the audience. SUMMARY:Juneteenth Food Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join Weeksville Heritage Center and Jummy’s Picks by Black-Owned Brooklyn for our second annual Juneteenth Food Festival on June 17 and 18\, from 12-7 pm. \n\n\n\nOn June 19\, 1865\, enslaved Black Texans were finally informed they were free\, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. This day would come to be commemorated as Emancipation Day\, also known as Juneteenth. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, celebrations were many — ceremonial readings\, church services\, and parades took place far and wide. Of course\, food has been a huge part of these celebrations since the holiday was first observed in 1866 and we aim to keep this tradition alive\, from Texas to Brooklyn! \n\n\n\nThis year’s festival will feature 29 Black food businesses offering African American fare traditional to the holiday\, such as barbecue\, fried fish\, crab boil\, red beans and rice\, red drinks and red velvet cake; as well as flavors from regions of Africa and the Caribbean. The event will also feature a small marketplace of apparel\, accessories\, records and books\, all from Black brands. \n\n\n\nA centerpiece of this year’s festival will be Sunday’s (6/18) skywriting demonstration\, in collaboration with artist Sandy Williams\, which will lay out the original boundaries of the historic Weeksville community and conversations about the legacy of Black freedom in America. Attendees will also be treated to cultural performances\, including live sets from DJ Monday Blue\, Donwill and DJ Tara (6/17)\, as well as the Soul Summit DJ collective (6/18). There will also be hands-on art-making activities\, resources from community organizations\, and so much more! Inspired by the founding of Weeksville\, gather with us as we honor the legacy of Black liberation in Brooklyn and beyond. \n\n\n\nGET YOUR TICKET \n\n\n\nAbout the Keeping: \n\n\n\nThe Keeping is a processional performance created for an ensemble of seven performers and six musicians. The multi-site specific procession is composed of live music\, dance\, storytelling\, and poetry that explore the legacy of sovereignty\, autonomy for Black communities who established freedom towns and spiritual communities from the 1800’s until now. \n\n\n\nThe Keeping activates the entire Weeksville campus and four blocks bordering the center. While the overall project and the procession are informed by Weeksville’s archive and legacy\, The Keeping is not a historical reenactment or traditional interpretation of the work as a walking tour. DESCRIPTION:Food has been a part of Juneteenth since the holiday was first observed on June 19\, 1866 — one year after Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced the emancipation of Black people in Texas\, one of the last groups of enslaved people in the U.S. to be freed. Black Texans gathered to celebrate a year of freedom with music and food\, over time creating annual Juneteenth traditions including red foods (strawberry soda\, red beans and rice\, red velvet cake\, watermelon) and barbecue. \n\n\n\nWith Juneteenth now recognized as a federal holiday\, our Juneteenth Food Festival on June 18-19 honors the past while creating new traditions in our present.  \n\n\n\nProduced by Weeksville Heritage Center and Jummy’s Picks by Black-Owned Brooklyn\, this event was designed to reflect the breadth of Black Brooklyn\, with 20 Black food vendors offering cuisine from across the African Diaspora\, including regions of the United States\, Africa\, the Caribbean and Latin America. \n\n\n\nThe festival will take place on the grounds of Weeksville Heritage Center\, a historic site in the African-American fight for freedom as one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America and home to many abolitionist leaders. SUMMARY:Pinkster Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated over several days\, Pinkster was an early 17th century festival that represented an important opportunity for enslaved Africans to gather outside of laboring and the festival continues to be honored as an embodiment of New York’s enslaved peoples to build community amongst themselves and resist bondage. \n\n\n\nOriginally a celebration of Pentecost\, Dutch settlers brought the observation of the holiday to New York during their early 17th century colonization of the land and peoples.
