We will be issuing wristbands for guests ages 21 and over for designated areas to consume alcoholic beverages purchased from our vendors. \n\n\n\nIs smoking allowed? \n\n\n\nSmoking\, vaping\, and use of e-cigarettes are prohibited on the grounds of Weeksville to prevent a fire and to further protect the historic grounds. \n\n\n\nAre pets allowed? \n\n\n\nTo help preserve our historic grounds\, pets are not allowed on the Weeksville campus during the festival. This policy also applies to pets in handbags or carrying cases. The only exception is for trained service animals.

DESCRIPTION:Drums play. We dance.  \n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday\, June 1 from 1pm – 6pm as we celebrate Pinkster\, a 17th-century festival rooted in the resilience\, resistance\, and cultural expression of enslaved Africans in early New York. \n\n\n\nOriginally a Dutch observance of Pentecost brought to the region during colonization\, Pinkster was transformed by generations of Africans and African-Americans into a spirited celebration of identity\, culture\, and survival.  \n\n\n\nFor enslaved peoples—who had few chances to rest or gather—Pinkster offered this rare moment. Over several days\, it became a time to celebrate\, resist bondage\, and nurture community through music\, dance\, food\, religious rituals\, and ancestral traditions. And so today we continue to honor Pinkster as a living embodiment of the strength and ingenuity of New York’s enslaved peoples\, and their enduring impact on our cultural heritage.  \n\n\n\nJoin us at Weeksville to experience Pinkster’s sights\, sounds\, and flavors through through live music\, traditional dance\, games\, workshops\, art-making\, and delicious food that reflects Black foodways and folkways. We’re honored to partner once again with Chief Baba Neil Clarke\, the Pinkster Players\, and community friends and family to share the history\, significance\, and continued relevance of this powerful festival.  \n\n\n\nLet us gather to celebrate our ancestors—and ensure their stories continue to pass on and  inspire future generations. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 23rd\, from 6-9 pm\, Weeksville Heritage Center is honored to present Black Visionaries: Visionary Frequencies of Technology\, Creativity\, and Black Futures\, a special activation of our commissioned augmented reality mural Black Visionaries by Nona Hendryx and Dream Machine Studio.   \n\n\n\nThe legendary Nona Hendryx will host the evening\, featuring a dynamic lineup of guests and collaborators\, including Craig Harris\, LaFrae Sci\, Carl Hancock Rux\, For The People\, Maya Georgieva\, and Sam Mejias. Together\, they’ll lead a night of sonic and communal exploration rooted in Weeksville’s five foundational pillars: Oasis\, Self-Determination\, Creativity\, Stewardship\, and Land. \n\n\n\nStructured as a live call-and-response\, audience members will contribute real-time lyrical and conceptual input\, which the artists will transform into an improvised\, collaborative soundscape. \n\n\n\nEvening Program \n\n\n\n6pm: Doors Open  – Enjoy light refreshments and get a chance to experience the Black Visionaries mural in our gallery.  \n\n\n\n6:45pm: Program Begins – Panel discussions and musical call-and-response performances exploring Weeksville’s five pillars: Oasis\, Self-Determination\, Stewardship\, Land\, and Creativity \n\n\n\n7:45pm: Visionaries Jam – A jam session led by For The People Band\, Craig Harris\, LaFrae Sci\, and Carl. She is a founding member of the Rock\, Gospel\, R&B Afrofuturistic group Labelle\, responsible for the No.1 hit ‘Lady Marmalade’ (“Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi C’est Soir?”)\, and she currently holds the post of Ambassador for Artistry in Music for Berklee College/Boston Conservatory. Her audio-visual productions\, inspired by Afrofuturism\, have been presented by The Metropolitan Museum\, Mass MOCA\, MOMA\, Park Avenue Armory\, Moog Fest\, Miami Basel\, London’s Serpentine Gallery\, and Somerset House. Her groundbreaking project\, The Dream Machine Experience\, a music-driven Mixed Reality installation combining AI\, AR\, and VR applications\, was presented at Lincoln Center\, NY\, in the Summer of 2024. Nona is passionate about Music\, Visual Art\, and Technology and continues to be a prolific artist. \n\n\n\nCraig Harris (Trombonist and Didgeridoo)  \n\n\n\nCraig Harris is a trombonist\, composer\, and bandleader whose visionary sound has shaped the course of creative music. Launching his career alongside Sun Ra\, Harris has since led ensembles like Nation of Imagination and Harlem Nightsongs\, while contributing to an extensive discography. His original works—including God’s Trombones\, Souls Within the Veil\, TriHarlenium\, Brown Butterfly\, and BREATHE—use music as a force for cultural memory and social commentary. An NAACP Image Award nominee and co-composer of the Oscar-winning Judas and the Black Messiah score\, Harris continues to create boundary-pushing work. His recent projects include FESTAC ’77 and Harlem Sonic Communiversity\, which bring his compositions directly to the communities that inspire them. A recipient of numerous honors\, including the Jazz Journalists Association’s Jazz Hero award\, Harris remains a vital advocate for art as public service. His latest recording\, Managing the Mask\, was released in 2022. \n\n\n\nLaFrae Sci (Percussionist and Technologist) \n\n\n\n LaFrae Sci is an imaginationist\, educator\, composer\, and sound scientist (physics) with a career spanning 30 years and 40 countries. Her creative process embraces percussion\, DIY\, modular and hardware synths. As a composer\, she writes for theater\, film\, and large and extended jazz and classical orchestras. Bedrock to her artistry is the roots and the fruits of the blues from spirituals to Afro-diasporic futuristic soundscapes that explore time travel\, prayer\, meditation\, and the African American ecstatic tradition. Perhaps her proudest achievement yet\, Frae-Frae was appointed executive director of williemaerockcamp.org in 2020. She has spearheaded the organization’s expansion to a full suite of year-round\, STEM-informed programming – currently serving over 600 girls in NYC. \n\n\n\nCarl H. Rux (Spoken Word Artists and Poet)   \n\n\n\nCarl Hancock Rux is a multidisciplinary artist and author of several books including the Village Voice Literary Prize-winning collection of poetry\, Pagan Operetta; the novel\, Asphalt; and the Obie Award-winning play\, Talk. His music has been released internationally on several labels including Sony/550\, Thirsty Ear\, and Giant Step. Mr. Rux is also co-Artistic Director of Mabou Mines and an artist in residence at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Doris Duke Award for New Works\, the Doris Duke Charitable Fund\, the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Prize\, the Bessie Award \, the Alpert Award in the Arts\, and a Global Change Maker award by WeMakeChange.Org. Mr. Rux’s archives are housed at the Billy Rose Theater Division of the New York Public Library\, the Archives of American Art\, Smithsonian Institution as well as the Film and Video/Theater and Dance Library of the California Institute of the Arts. \n\n\n\nFor The People (Band)   \n\n\n\nBorn on the East Coast\, raised in the West. Growing up in LA\, Kobie enjoyed music from all over the city as he developed as a young saxophone player. Throughout his development he played often with musicians from the Leimert Park community. There\, he received private lessons from Ricky Washington and had the honor of knowing legends like Reggie Andrews\, who were responsible for shaping popular jazz artists like Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin. A recent graduate from The New School\, Kobie is now making waves as one of the new rising artists from LA. He recently finished his debut EP “For The People” followed by a nearly sold out concert at the renowned venue\, Public Records. \n\n\n\nMaya Georgieva – Senior Direction Innovation Center\, XR AI\, and Quantum Labs.  \n\n\n\nMaya Georgieva is a futurist\, immersive storyteller\, and global thought leader shaping the future of learning and creativity. She is the founding Senior Director of the Innovation Center and XR\, AI\, and Quantum Labs at The New School\, where she leads cutting-edge initiatives at the intersection of technology\, design\, and education. At Parsons School of Design\, she teaches the largest immersive storytelling course in the U.S.\, guiding students in crafting speculative worlds through spatial computing and generative AI. Maya’s work blends narrative design with emerging tech to explore new modes of storytelling and provoke meaningful dialogue. Her projects have been featured at SXSW\, UNESCO\, SIGGRAPH\, iLRN\, and MIT. A sought-after speaker and collaborator\, she works with artists\, designers\, and technologists to expand the possibilities of multisensory storytelling across academia and industry. \n\n\n\nSam Mejias – Dean of the School of Art\, Media and Technology\, and Asso.  \n\n\n\nProfessor of Social Justice and Community Engagement. A multi-instrumentalist\, sound designer and multimedia producer\, Sam Mejias (he/him) is Associate Professor of Social Justice and Community Engagement in the School of Design Strategies\, and a Visiting Fellow at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Working primarily as an ethnographer\, Sam’s research explores the cultural politics of social justice and civic engagement in the US\, Europe and the Middle East. His projects investigate how design\, discourse and communication influence the promotion of critical learning\, equity\, and civic engagement in the lives of young people in formal and informal spaces. \n\n\n\nThis project was made possible with the support by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE

SUMMARY: [IF...] Iterative Fictions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with artist Eto Otitigbe as he presents [IF…] (Iterative Fictions)\, a creative research project that draws on materials from the Weeksville Heritage Center archives to imagine stories of Black life\, past and future. “Iterative fiction” refers to a narrative process that shifts and expands over time\, inviting multiple perspectives. Through this approach\, [IF…] traces\, recreates\, and reactivates fragmented artifacts for future use. \n\n\n\nThis performance blends sculpture\, sound\, and visual media to reimagine the Black Archive and open new pathways for understanding history. \n\n\n\nOtitigbe is joined by collaborators Zane Rodulfo and Dakota Ray. Rodulfo composed an original soundscape using interviews from the Weeksville Lost Jazz Shrines of Brooklyn\, a project developed by Weeksville’s former research team that highlights Central Brooklyn’s jazz legacy. Ray contributes visual projections that combine vintage cartoons\, blaxploitation films\, and images from the Golden Legacy illustrated history series\, creating a layered and visually striking atmosphere. \n\n\n\nFeatured Artists and Collaborators \n\n\n\nEto Otitigbe is a polymedia artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture\, public art\, performance\, installation\, and community engagement. His public works include installations at Socrates Sculpture Park and Randall’s Island Park\, as well as a key role on the design team for the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at UVA. Recent projects include Peaceful Journey (Mt. Vernon\, NY)\, a permanent tribute to Heavy D\, and Invasive Species (Philadelphia\, PA)\, a mixed reality work exploring plant life and migration. \n\n\n\nOtitigbe has received fellowships and awards from the National Arts Club\, CEC Artslink\, and the Smithsonian\, where he researched Urhobo language and African material culture. He is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at Brooklyn College and holds degrees from MIT\, Stanford\, and the University of Plymouth. He is also the founder of eo Studio\, a 2023 Creative Capital Awardee focused on community-driven public art \n\n\n\nZane Rodulfo is a Trinidadian drummer and composer based in New York City. Trained in both Jazz Performance and Ethnomusicology at Oberlin Conservatory\, he holds a graduate degree in Jazz Studies from NYU. Rodulfo has performed at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Blue Note and has opened for legends such as Stevie Wonder and Roy Ayers. \n\n\n\nHis work spans performance\, composition\, and sound installation\, with commissions from the Guggenheim Museum\, Whitney Museum\, Brooklyn Arts Council\, and more. His piece Around the Circle was featured in the Guggenheim’s Vasily Kandinsky exhibition (2021–2022) alongside his sound sculpture Abandoned Orchestra. Dakota Ray is a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist who learned very early that she could use art as a way of connection and expression. Through the use of comic art\, sculpture\, digital art\, and drawing\, many of her works center around evoking feelings of nostalgia\, particularly around food. Dakota earned an A.A.S. (Honors) in Art Foundations-Studio Art with a concentration in Sculpture from CUNY BMCC in Spring 2023 and is currently a Senior at CUNY Brooklyn College\, on track to receive a BA in Art\, with a minor in Theater Production in May 2025. Dakota’s future goal is to create installations\, public art\, and scenic designs that are interactive and immersive. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE

DESCRIPTION:On April 24th\, Summer School Radios’s deep listening session returns for its fourth installment at Weeksville Heritage Center.  \n\n\n\nsessions turns our performance space to an experiential room for sound\, featuring curated music and live performance tailored for deep listening\, contemplation\, grooving\, and feeling.  \n\n\n\nsessions (4) opens at 5 pm with a meditative sound bath led by Kia Islam\, offering a moment of grounding before our deep listening begins. At 7 pm\, Lovie will guide us through an intimate live set\, with sound amplified by Karlala Soundsystem.  \n\n\n\nThis will be a listening room: \n\n\n\nWhen the session begins\, attendees will be asked to maintain a silent room. This is a seated space\, and you are welcome to bring blankets or pillows for comfort. \n\n\n\nTea and refreshments will be served between 5 and 6 pm\, with the listening session beginning promptly at 7. This event is free to attend with an RSVP\, with limited space for walk-ins. \n\n\n\nSonic Contributors \n\n\n\nLovie (summer school radio) – Broadcasting monthly from The Lot Radio\, summer school radio started as a pandemic project from Brooklyn-based Lovie–her first venture as a music curator. she had yet to play beyond her bedroom when The Lot Radio offered her a now 4-year-old residency\, slowly but surely becoming a staple show on the platform. a devoted following of listeners tune in to hear Lovie’s discoveries for a sonic range that spans ambient\, spoken word\, spiritual jazz\, soul\, and alternative R&B. in 2024\, summer school radio expanded beyond the digital into the physical\, and now presents deep listening sessions at Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights\, Brooklyn. \n\n\n\nKia Islam– Kia Islam is a yoga and meditation instructor\, multidisciplinary artist\, co-founder of Good Juju\, and a Nike Well Collective Trainer. Growing up between the East Coast and the Middle East\, Kia was immersed in diverse cultural and devotional practices from an early age. She graduated from The New School with a double major in Photography and Culture & Media\, where she first encountered Hatha Yoga through her first teacher\, Sri Dharma Mittra. DESCRIPTION:Through Fabric & Frame is the second installment in our Women’s History Month series\, Legacy is a Living Force. Join us Saturday\, March 22nd\, between 11 am and 6 pm for a daylong study of Black feminist thought\, engaging the works of Faith Ringgold and Lorraine O’Grady.  \n\n\n\nThrough storytelling\, quilting\, photography\, and collective study\, we hope to learn how to incorporate their legacies into our own creative practices. \n\n\n\nThe Day’s Offerings Include: \n\n\n\n11 AM – 12 PM  \n\n\n\nStorytime: Tar Beach – A reading of Faith Ringgold’s beloved children’s book\, inviting reflections on dreams\, memory\, and freedom. Families are welcome\, and art-making inspired by the book will follow the reading. \n\n\n\n1 – 3 PM  \n\n\n\nQuiltmaking Workshop – Led by sisters Donnette and Kimberly Williams and inspired by Ringgold’s storytelling quilts\, we will create patterned pillowcases while exploring quilting traditions and their symbolic meanings. \n\n\n\n4 – 5:30 PM \n\n\n\nTeach-In – We will close the day with a communal reading and discussion of Lorraine O’Grady’s seminal text Olympia’s Maid\, reflecting on the ongoing relevance of the Black feminist gaze. \n\n\n\nONGOING  \n\n\n\n11 AM – 6 PM \n\n\n\nPhotography Activation –Photographer Laila Annmarie Stevens will lead a drop-in photo session reactivating Lorraine O’Grady’s iconic Art Is… series. To extend this communal art-making practice\, disposable cameras will be provided for guests to document their own perspectives on the Weeksville grounds. RSVP HERE. \n\n\n\nFACILITATOR BIOS \n\n\n\nAbout Laila Annmarie Stevens \n\n\n\nLaila Annmarie Stevens (b. 2001) is a Black Queer Photographer and Visual Artist born and raised in South Jamaica Queens\, NY based in Brooklyn\, NY. She received her BFA in Photography and Related Media at The Fashion Institute of Technology. She is redefining traditional family structures through contemporary community kinship\, particularly amongst queer youth and the sisterhood of marginalized women and girls. Through her early work with local youth organizations throughout the five boroughs\, she’s incorporated image-making to envision a world of inclusion and power.  \n\n\n\nAbout Donnette and Kimberly Williams \n\n\n\nDonnette A. Williams has lived a life in service to her community through her practice of the arts\, which started at the age of four. As a holistic and inclusive occupational therapy professional\, she has been able to combine both passions to curate diasporic galleries and cultural forums for the whole person via platforms of dance\, culinary demonstrations\, book clubs\, and more. She has also served for nearly twenty years in her church’s Black History Ministry\, of which she is currently the Co-Director. \n\n\n\nKimberly Denise Williams believes that every community deserves the information and resources needed to make the best decisions\, and this has been a guiding mission in both her professional and vocational activities. A native Brooklynite\, she has worked to amplify her community and has been featured in national publications like Vibe and local Brooklyn outlets like Voices of Lefferts\, where she currently volunteers on the oral history project. Kimberly also serves on the advisory board of Little Caribbean. She can be found chasing whimsy\, grace\, and justice when she is not running around Prospect Park. \n\n\n\nThis event is two of three in our month-long dedication to the luminaries who transitioned this past year\, including Faith Ringgold\, Lorraine O’Grady\, and Judith Jamison. In the face of our present reality\, we understand that the work they have left behind continues to nourish our imaginations and shape our collective consciousness. She is also a Set Decorator/Dresser for TV and Film and the Creator/Director of The Free Black Women’s Library a Black Feminist social art project\, literary hub\, reading room and community carespace located in Bed-Stuy\, Brooklyn which features a collection of 5000 books written by Black women and Black nonbinary folks\, a period pantry\, free store\, weekly book swap\, backyard garden\, and a wide array of free public programs and creative workshops. Through her work she offers new and critical narratives on the constructs of race\, gender\, beauty\, and sanity. DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion: Growing Up Rikers\, Then and Now \n\n\n\nOn February 19th\, we will be hosting an intergenerational panel discussion on the impact of Rikers Island on young people in New York City. \n\n\n\nThe evening will begin with a panel featuring individuals who have firsthand experience with Rikers and the NYC legal system as adolescents and young adults\, sharing their journeys and perspectives. Following this\, a panel of advocates and service providers will discuss the current landscape of programs designed to support at-risk and system-involved youth. \n\n\n\nTo conclude\, all panelists will come together for a Q&A session\, encouraging audience participation in a dynamic discussion\, followed by a youth performance to close the evening. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect and explore pathways to liberation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHelen “Skip” Skipper \n\n\n\nHelen Skipper\, or Skip as she prefers to be called\, has been working in peer support since her final release from years of multiple incarcerations and systems involvement in 2007. She is the Executive Director of the NYC Justice Peer Initiative\, a Beyond the Bars 20-21′ Fellow\, and an honors graduate of St. Francis College. Skip is pursuing a Master of Arts and moving toward a PhD in Criminology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her criminology work includes acceptance into the American Society of Criminology\, where she has presented her original scholarship at their annual meeting for the last 2 years. \n\n\n\nShe is also a board member and participant of College and Community Fellowship\, which works with justice-involved women through community support and access to higher education. Skip has been a part of the Rikers Public Memory Project community since 2023\, where she has contributed an oral history interview\, served as a Directly Impacted Design Advisor for RPMP’s Mobile Exhibit\, and most recently been accepted to the inaugural Rikers Narrative Change Community Fellowship\, where she will produce a documentary theater project. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIsaac Scott \n\n\n\nIsaac I. Scott is a multidisciplinary visual artist who has been recognized with multiple awards for his creative endeavors. Isaac was ordained in 2018 at God’s Touch Healing Ministry\, where he served with dedication for three years as the Associate Pastor. Currently\, Isaac is actively engaged in ministry within the African Methodist Episcopal Church\, holding a Certificate of License to Preach\, where he integrates faith\, art\, and social justice. Isaac Scott is an experienced community organizer\, currently serving as the Director of Community Initiatives at Another Choice Youth and Family Outreach Inc. and the Chairperson for the Human Services Committee at Manhattan Community Board 11. His leadership as President of the Justice Arts Coalition and his ongoing service on the National Religious Campaign Against Torture’s Prison Program Advisory Council highlight his deep understanding of the intricacies of both the prison and reentry systems \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLuz Hernandez \n\n\n\nLuz Hernandez\, also known as Luz Tha Goddess or “Sunshine\,” is a passionate activist\, advocate\, artist\, and photographer who was born in Queens and raised in the South Bronx and is dedicated to empowering marginalized communities. Drawing from her own transformative experiences of incarceration and systemic injustice\, Luz’s journey is a testament to the power of art and advocacy in breaking toxic cycles and fostering healing. \n\n\n\nShe is currently publishing A Fractured Menace\, a powerful poetry collection that delves deep into her incarceration\, exploring harrowing themes of gang violence\, gun violence\, human trafficking\, child abuse\, sexual abuse\, and domestic violence. Through her evocative words\, Luz invites readers into her world\, revealing the complexities of survival and resilience. \n\n\n\nAs an intern at Justice Ambassadors at Columbia University\, she is actively crafting policy proposals with elected officials\, aiming to reshape the narratives surrounding justice-involved individuals. Luz is also a dynamic presence in her community\, voluntarily hosting open mics at Youth Justice Network\, where she collaborates with organizations like Fortune Society\, Reform\, and others to advocate for criminal justice reform. These events serve as vital safe spaces for artists to express themselves and heal from the trauma of incarceration and prior life experiences. \n\n\n\nHer photography project\, Meet Me at the Crossroads\, confronts uncomfortable truths and challenges societal labels\, showcasing the human stories behind high-profile and low-profile cases. This impactful work will be displayed at the renowned Benrubi Art Gallery\, offering a visual narrative that underscores the strength and resilience of those who have been justice-impacted. \n\n\n\nThrough her multifaceted work\, Luz hopes to battle parole justice\, end mass incarceration\, and support individuals with high-profile cases in successfully reentering society. By garnering support for reentry groups\, destigmatizing individuals with high-profile charges\, and helping them reunify with their families and meet their basic needs\, she aims to prevent further incarceration and foster a sense of belonging. \n\n\n\nWith a heart dedicated to spreading love and positivity\, Luz strives to change the perspectives of those in authority within the criminal justice system while uplifting others who have faced similar challenges. Her son is the driving force behind her relentless advocacy; her battle to reclaim him inspires her to help everyone she can. Luz makes it a priority to infuse every space she enters with warmth and compassion\, ensuring she puts a smile on everyone’s face. She makes sure everyone knows that vulnerability is strength. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNaquasia Jones \n\n\n\nNaquasia Pollard is an advocate\, activist and direct service provider. She has been deeply involved in movements for social justice drawing upon her own experience – 15 years of incarceration in a Women’s Correctional Facility at the age of 19 and being pregnant on Rikers Island (Rosie M. Singer). Upon her release in October 2017 she went to work at the Ladies of Hope Ministries where she utilized her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Minor in Psychology\, earned in prison\, to support women impacted by incarceration. Her personal and professional goals are connected to her own experiences with systems that were supposed to support her but instead have failed her. As a result\, Naquasia is deeply committed to supporting women and young girls impacted by systemic failures. \n\n\n\nWhile working at the Ladies of Hope Ministries\, Naquasia became more involved in advocacy and direct services for women and young girls\, using a trauma-centered approach to support them in their journey towards healing and restoration. In 2018\, Naquasia founded Pure Legacee Inc.\, an organization providing a healing haven for young girls to break generational barriers and develop community leaders. She is also a part of the Beyond Rosies campaign and Herstories documentary. Naquasia is involved in the Probation and Parole Reform Project with Columbia University. In 2021\, she was part of the FACES Speakers Bureau to lift the voices of formerly incarcerated people as agents of change. Her work reminds us that love is not passive\, nor is it confined to romantic fantasy. Instead\, love is a deliberate and conscientious act that nurtures the well-being of oneself and others\, serving as an initial step toward collective freedom. \n\n\n\nThis Valentine’s Day\, we invite you to join us in reimagining the holiday as Liberatory Love Day. On February 14th\, poetess Nicole Alexander will lead us in a revelatory workshop where we’ll explore the depths of love and liberation. Together\, we’ll craft valentines of poetry for ourselves and others\, inspired by Nicole’s practice of immortalizing the hearts of strangers through her written word.  \n\n\n\nDrop in anytime between 12:00 and 6:00 p.m.\, and as you write\, take a moment to explore our open-source library\, featuring a curated collection of works on radical love. DESCRIPTION:Screening: Closing the Last Penal Colony \n\n\n\nJoin filmmaker and organizer Edwin Santana for a screening of his award-winning film\, Closing the Last Penal Colony. This documentary delves into the history of the Rikers Island jail complex and the grassroots movement to shut it down. The film received an Honorable Mention for Best Short Documentary at the 2024 Katra LatinX Film Festival in NYC. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, Santana and members of the Campaign to Close Rikers will participate in a panel discussion and Q&A. They will discuss the 2019 plan to close Rikers Island jails—achieved through grassroots organizing—and explore strategies for reinvesting in communities. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Rikers Public Memory Project’s exhibition\, Torture Island: Past\, Present\, Future\, on view at Weeksville Heritage Center from February 1 to March 1\, 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and learn more about the path to justice and reform. \n\n\n\nAbout Edwin Santana \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEdwin Santana is a photographer\, filmmaker\, and founder of TUFF ART MEDIA. He’s also the host of his own YouTube variety show called THE CHECK IN.  His new documentary entitled CLOSING THE LAST PENAL COLONY\,  has won Honorable Mention For Best Short Documentary at the 2024’s Katra Latinx Film Festival.  As a formerly incarcerated individual\, and a Community Organizer for Freedom Agenda\, Edwin’s advocacy includes closing Riker’s Island\, decarcerating New York City\, and dismantling mass incarceration. \n\n\n\nPanelist Bios \n\n\n\nDarren Mack (Moderator)\, Co-Founder/Co-Director of Freedom Agenda \n\n\n\nDarren Mack is a formerly incarcerated activist\, advocate\, and organizer. Darren was involved as a leader in the #CLOSErikers campaign since it’s launch in 2016\, and was awarded the very first Lawrence “Larry” Gelber Award for Justice in 2017 by JustLeadershipUSA. He is an alumnus of the Bard Prison Initiative where he earned his B.A. and graduated from Hunter College with an MSW in 2019. Darren previously worked as the Outreach and Alumni Engagement Coordinator with JustLeadershipUSA. \n\n\n\nMichael Higgins Jr.\, Land Use Planner with New York City Environmental Justice Alliance \n\n\n\nMichael Higgins Jr. is a longtime community organizer born and raised in Brooklyn. He got his start in organizing as a member of Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE) doing base building and political education with public housing residents in Fort Greene\, Gowanus and Boerum Hill. Later\, he worked with Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) as a staff organizer supporting initiatives such as Turning the Tide and the Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice (GNCJ). In his previous position as Senior Organizer of Housing and Sustainability at Brooklyn Movement Center\, he led tenant association development at local apartment complexes and recruitment for a renewable solar subscription service for low and moderate-income Central Brooklynites. He received his bachelor’s degree in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. \n\n\n\nLezandre Khadu\, Member of Freedom Agenda\, and mother of Stephan Khadu \n\n\n\nLezandre Khadu is a resident of Bed-Stuy and the mother of Stephan Khadu\, who died in 2021 at just 24 years old due to negligence from the Department of Correction when he was detained on ‘The Boat’ — an extension of Rikers Island. She is an active member of Freedom Agenda and the Campaign to Close Rikers\, and continues to fight for justice for her son\, for all people and communities targeted by the criminal legal system. \n\n\n\nDr. Divine Pryor\, Criminal Justice Co-Chair with the NAACP of NYS \n\n\n\nDivine Pryor is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the People’s Police Academy (PPA) located in the City University of New York at Medgar Evers College\, where he works closely with community leaders\, system stakeholders\, institutional heads and others to facilitate the integration of solution oriented\, outcome-based efforts that minimize risks and maximize positive results. Before ever attending a formal institution\, Divine Pryor acquired his very first degree from the “school of hard knocks” with a Ph.D. from UCLA\, that is the “University on the Corner of Lenox Avenue” in New York City. While incarcerated\, he would rediscover his love for learning and resume his educational journey\, obtaining both a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology from S.U.N.Y. New Paltz. After his release in 1991 he would go on to complete his graduate studies at both Kennedy Western & Suffield University and would continue to build his exceptional career in the Criminal Justice field. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRSVP here

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Opening: Torture Island: Past\, Present\, Future \n\n\n\nIn 1829\, while a fourteen-year-old future abolitionist\, minister\, and Weeksville notable Henry Highland Garnet is at sea working as a cabin boy to supplement his family’s meager income\, slave catchers ransacked his family’s New York City home. His parents\, who escaped enslavement in Maryland just five years earlier\, are able to evade capture. His teenage sister Eliza is eventually detained and brought before City Recorder Richard Riker as a fugitive. She is acquitted with the help of a savvy lawyer who provides false evidence that she was born in New York and not Maryland.” -Riker’s Public Memory Project timeline \n\n\n\nThe Garnets’ family story was all too common during Riker’s time as city recorder\, and he would become notorious for terrorizing free and freedom-seeking Black New Yorkers. This February\, we are honored to bring light to stories like Eliza’s as we partner with the Rikers Public Memory Project to present their exhibition Torture Island: Past\, Present\, Future.
